Meet Chesley Verbond: Founder of ItsyCycle, the Company Turning Struggles into Purpose

Hello Chesley! We're thrilled to be chatting with you today at FEM-START. Could you share what sparked your entrepreneurial journey and the motivation behind launching ItsyCycle?

My own experiences as the child of young parents led to challenges in their parenting. I witnessed my parents’ struggles and realized that I wanted to do things differently when I became a parent.

In my early 20s, after graduating from the dance academy, the intense routine of the dance academy suddenly disappeared, and I fell into a dark place, experiencing depression. I found myself searching for who I was, what I wanted in life, and dealing with unresolved events from my childhood. During my depression, I realized the importance of having a vision to overcome it, which is how my dream of becoming an entrepreneur emerged. Though I didn’t know yet in what field, I knew that working towards my ideals and inspiring others was what I wanted for my future.

I then explored which field of study would best fit my entrepreneurial dream and decided on Communication and Multimedia Design.

During my thesis research, I was able to study the needs of parents, which led to the birth of the ItsyCycle concept in 2022.

What are some of the most essential things you did to get your business off the ground?

I naturally started ItsyCycle from my thesis, which at that point was still just an idea. How could I turn an idea into a real business? What I found useful was bringing together people from the field who could either motivate me or provide advice when I felt lost. Having like-minded people around who understand entrepreneurship has always given me a lot of strength, as it can sometimes be a lonely journey.

How did you build your customer base and grow ItsyCycle?

Social media is indispensable nowadays and is a crucial component for making your product known to a wider audience. One of the aspects of my studies was developing social media strategies, which gave me valuable insights into what is needed to succeed in this area. Another important lesson is understanding that you don’t always have to do everything yourself. I collaborate with a media company for both strategy and execution, which helps keep me sharp.

What are some of the biggest mistakes you made along the way, and what did you learn from them?

My biggest learning experience has been realizing that it’s okay to deviate from the original concept sometimes. What is important in this process is to stay true to yourself while also considering the needs and feasibility of your idea.

What is your biggest achievement since founding the company, and how did you get there?

The greatest achievement is seeing your product finally hit the market after a year of hard work and adjustments, receiving your first orders, and getting feedback from customers

What advice do you have for other women who want to start their own business?

Even when your situation is difficult or your goal seems far away, remember that good things take time. Nothing happens by itself; it requires resilience, consistency, and overcoming setbacks to get to where you want to be. Entrepreneurship is a calling, not meant for everyone, but it gives you the chance to bring people together to work on your ideals and make an impact.
